Sahmat demanding....desaffronization!

Detoxifying’ education
- Armed with hrd, arjun sets out to undo joshi decisions

Arjun Singh, who has succeeded Murli Manohar Joshi as human resource development minister, plans to “detoxify” the education and cultural departments.

Singh, a strong critic of the Sangh parivar’s political and educational agenda, has indicated that the HRD ministry will revoke the school curriculum introduced by the National Council of Educational Research and Training and restore textbooks authored by Left-liberal historians like Romila Thapar, Arjun Dev and Satish Chandra.

The senior Congress leader, who had been in charge of the ministry during P.V. Narasimha Rao’s tenure, also made it clear that Joshi’s decision to slash IIM fees will be revoked. “Autonomy must continue in the institute of higher education.” The draft common minimum programme put together by the Congress had stressed the point.

Singh indicated that Joshi’s saffronisation programme would now be scrapped. “Detoxification is a medical term. But it has to be applied to the HRD ministry, ” he said.

Singh headed the parliamentary standing committee that examined the validity of the NCERT’s school curriculum and the distortions in the textbooks. He is known to have patronised — during his tenure as HRD minister — the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (Sahmat), a Left cultural organisation.

Sahmat, which has been highlighting the saffronisation of education, has already demanded a series of stringent measures to undo the damage by Joshi.

The only way to counter the leftists is to no longer rely on the government for establishing and supporting academic and research institutions for the study and revival of indic traditions. This is as it should be -- government support is a Leftist way to do things. The new government will only support Christian and Muslim initiatives and will do everything to kill Hindu initiatives.

The private sector -- i.e., the individual Hindu -- needs to jump in to rescue Hindu culture and civilization. No point waiting for govt. handouts.

Left wants HRD ministry ‘desaffronised’

Once the broad contours of the United Progressive Alliance's common minimum programme (CMP) are worked out, the Left parties will propose appointing a review committee to "desaffronise" and "purge" the HRD ministry on the whole and the education department in particular.

According to the CPI(M), the panel will review the functioning of institutions like the

NCERT, UGC, Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR). It will comprise educationists, academics and intellectuals.

Confirming that all the Left parties will propose the appointment of an experts’ committee, CPI(M)’s Nilotpal Basu said: “We have such a proposal on our minds". The CPI's D. Raja also said that the Left would press for the constitution of a "review committee".

But the Left will first wait and watch the stand the Congress takes on the issue in the draft CMP before putting forward its proposal.

Basu said the Left would focus on "cleaning up" the media, culture and education departments. This will obviously be aimed at, to begin with, "correcting" history textbooks which were rewritten by the NCERT at the behest of M.M. Joshi. “The objective will be to remove some of the distortions which were incorporated in the textbooks,” Basu said.

The panel is also expected to look into the “infiltration” and “installation” of RSS and Sangh Parivar sympthasiers in institutions like the NCERT, UGC, ICHR, ICSSR and Indian Council of Philosophical Research, besides the HRD ministry and the culture department.

This entails identifying some of "these elements" before purging the organisations. Bureaucrats with identified Sangh leanings and sympathies will be given the marching orders. A similar exercise is likely to be carried out in Doordarshan.

The CPI(M)’s manifesto gives a foretaste of what the Left plans to do to make the education
system “secular”. It says: "The BJP-led government has sought to communalise the educational system by introducing anti-secular ideology in the curriculum and textbooks. History is sought to be re-written on communal lines.” The CPI(M) intends to correct the "syllabi and curricula to inculcate secularism, progressive values, scientific temper and national unity".

The committee may also be asked to go into the viability of continuing with "Vedic astrology" as a course in colleges and universities.

>> Shyamb : And I dont
know why in neutral countrie like US Hindus are bashed by liberals
and muslims are embraced by them even when there is no obvious political agenda. Why is Hindu automatically associated with right by the lefties <<

That's the image our left controlled desi media has created. And for obvious reason US media has followed it, without need to enquire truth.

Dr. Narayanan,
Is there a possibility that we could sue Courtright in a US court? How much would it cost? Any idea? I am willing to contribute both time and money towards this.
