The Speech Musharraf Won't Make

As I extend a hand of true friendship to India, I wish for a different future for our children than what we have together given them for the last fifty years. Together, we can curtail the violence that affects our societies. Let us stop teaching our children hatred towards one another. A nation living on hate is a nation that is sick. We need to heal ourselves... Expand

Sankrant, Fantastic - okay, a bit fantastic - but I mean really fantastic! (Sorry, other words fail me). Looks like mushy is firmly in command now, so the "hands are tied" excuse won't wash any more. But is the will to pursue peace there? Hardly, by all indications. But we live on hope, don't we?

Minimal, what specific point in Musharraf's speech do you agree or disagree. What specific points would you like to see in a speech by Vajapayee?

Funny how Pakistan needs to do all of the "extending"? Why couldn't it be entitled "The Speech Vajpaye Won't Make?" It takes 2 hands to clap...not everything is one-sided

A brilliant piece on Indo-Pak relations. I wish! if Musharraf could understand the sentiments of new generations of both the countries. Pakistan can never progress by using the hatred against India as a plank. As soon as it relinquishes the hatred, the two nations will be one because there is only a thin and artificial wall between the two nations. Congratulations Sankrant. Govind Singh

Hmmm. There is a theory I have. India-Pakistan can never see peace till the ghosts of Partition are all exorcised. Musharraf is one such apparition on their side and there are plenty such on ours(Advani to begin with). Ours may not be as diabolical(but I say that because of my bias perhaps). Till such time the respective countries exorcise them out of their respective lives, we will continue to be a peoples perennially estranged. Per me it will take at least another 25-50 years before peace can come to the subcontinent. But who knows what else we will have conjured up by then to remain at loggerheads. Yet an optimist I remain. Thanks for the 'speech'. One wishes Musharraf wills being 'ghost' written thus(pun intended) :-) Raghu.

The previous mail was a test. This article is fantastic and is concurrent with the developments surrounding the subcontinent in the recent days..

Sankrant, Excellent piece! Nice idea! (writing a speech for Mush) I agree with comments 1 and 3. Our own folks also can learn something from this speech.

Absolutely brilliant - one simply wishes that Pakistan finds leaders with convictions to lead their people to peace and prosperity. This speech if appropriately modified to fit Vajpayee to stop the Hindu-Muslim animosity within India - the line "we cannot choose our neighbors" rings so true in the Indian context as well. If wishes were horses....Regards, Murali
